Currently, DarkFuse is only accepting unsolicited manuscripts for its online magazine.

If you've been published by DarkFuse before, please contact your editor if you have a novel or novella manuscript you're shopping.

DarkFuse Magazine is an online publication now live and taking submissions for its featured fiction series.  Here's what we're looking for:

Original Fiction: Horror, thriller, suspense, crime, sci-fi, bizarre—anything that is horror-based.  Original, never-before-published stories.  No period pieces (settings should take place in modern times). 1500-7500 words paid.

Payment: 1 cent per word on publication. Free ad space worth up to $300 to promote personal website, book or other online venture that's related to horror.

Rights Taken: One-time web publication rights.  One year exclusive agreement before submitting to another market. Non-exclusive archive rights for the life of the online magazine. First anthology rights in English as stories accepted in the magazine will also be up for inclusion in the DarkFuse anthology series (not guaranteed). All other rights revert to the author on publication.

Response Time: 6-9 months.

For New & Mid-list Authors: This magazine is a paying market with a major focus on exposure through distribution and paid marketing and promotions of its content. DarkFuse editors use submissions to scout talent for the company's main focus and revenue stream which is its digital and physical book lines. Second-chance offers may be extended to 5% of submissions not chosen for the featured story slots. Second chance offers are for high quality fiction that our editors thought narrowly missed the cut, but would still appeal to our readership. DarkBorne Muses is an ongoing series that introduces new authors to DarkFuse's readership. If authors are offered a second-chance offer, different payment structures will be offered and they may accept or decline this offer.

For Established & Professional Authors: This magazine offers professional rates and a growing readership. Payment greater than 6 cents per word may be offered if your work is solicited.

DarkFuse Magazine's The Vault Series focuses on reprinting currently uncollected works that are no longer available on the market (including the web). Many authors have published short fiction in limited editions or in print magazines no longer in circulation. The Vault's focus is to get this fiction back in front of readers and DarkFuse Magazine is one of the leading online publications with currently more than 5,000 registered members (1200+ paid subscribers).

Original Fiction: Horror only. Reprint stories.  1500-3500 words.

Payment: DarkFuse does not pay for reprinted work. However, accepted authors will get a 1-year subscription to the online magazine (worth $59.88) + Ad spot (worth $50) for the author to promote his or her personal website or work available at or other retailers (no competing publishers please).

Rights Taken: One-time web publication rights.  One year exclusive agreement before submitting to another market. Non-exclusive archive rights for the life of the online magazine.  All other rights revert to the author on publication.

Response Time: 6 months or less.

Q: Can you let me know if my story qualifies?
A: If your story can be read in an eBook at Amazon or other retailers (as part of a collection or as a standalone story) or can be read on a website, we will not feature it in The Vault.  The Vault's purpose is to bring back great stories that are now out of print and no longer accessible to horror readers.

Size limit: 99-999 words

DarkFuse is now accepting original micro-fiction (flash fiction) for its website DarkFuse Magazine (for its Horror d'oeuvres series) and its DarkFuse anthology series published under the same name. Before submitting, please make sure your work fits ALL of the following criteria:
(1) Manuscript must be between 99 and 999 words
(2) Story is dark fiction (dark element to the plot).  Thriller, horror, suspense, crime, bizarre.
(3) Fiction is original, never before published in any form
(4) Manuscript is not submitted (or will be submitted) elsewhere during our review process
(5) No multiple submissions in each category (only one flash fiction story at a time)
If accepted, DarkFuse acquires non-exclusive lifetime rights for web (each story will be archived for the life of the site) and first worldwide anthology rights for both print and eBook. DarkFuse does not take any film rights or other media. Year's Best Anthologies are excluded from these rights, meaning that if your work would be accepted in the major year's best anthos (edited by Ellen Datlow, Stephen Jones, etc.), then it would be free to be reprinted in those specific publications.
The initial publication will be online at DarkFuse Magazine.  This website is a subscriber-based / members-only site, so your work will not be accessible to the general public—only to paid subscribers).  DarkFuse will also be publishing stories in its DarkFuse anthology series to be published in eBook & trade hardcover (featuring some of the stories published online).
All authors will receive $20 payable on initial publication, plus 1 free copy of all print editions their work appears in.  In addition, authors will get a 3-month subscription to DarkFuse Magazine.
Response Time
You will receive our decision within 6 months of submission. Responses will be sent via e-mail form letter (we do not have the staff to provide a critiquing service).
DarkFuse is best known for its quality fiction. This isn't the easiest market to break into, so please bring your best work.
Always provide us with a clean, well-formatted manuscript with your name, address and other standard information on the cover page or header.
The fiction is always our top priority, but during our final cuts we also look for authors who know how to market their work. Having a clean, informative author website will have a positive effect on final decisions. Also, providing an interesting marketing synopsis will go a long way.
